"If the world does end tomorrow," Joseph said softly, "and if it all was for nothing, if I killed him for - nothing..."

After awhile, Zacharias said, "Yes, what?"

"Huh?"

"An 'if' statement generally has a corresponding 'then' statement. You just trailed off into nothing."

"Well, yes." Joseph sighed. "If the world ends, then there isn't a then. That's my point, really."

"I see." Zacharias stared out at the fog-blurred world. Somehow heights weren't so bad when he couldn't see the grounds. Finally, he went on, "You know, if you wanted, I could still get us a plane, or a car. We could leave, go to England - I'll show you the academy, you can meet my friends. Or we could go to Egypt and buy a dahabeeyah and travel the Nile - "

"No, Zac. I don't want to go."

"Ah."

There was another long pause. Zacharias irrationally wondered what would happen if he climbed up on the rail and shouted something nonsensical. He suspected that it would end with a rather wet splat on the pavement.

"Isn't there anything we can do?" Joseph asked plaintively.

"Not unless you've got an army or some heavy-duty weaponry under that cloak." Zacharias's tone was faintly reproachful. Joseph went red.

"I only did it to save you!"

"No, you did it because she's bloody sexy and you're a seventeen-year-old boy."

Joseph was silent for a few minutes. Zacharias wondered if he'd somehow offended the other boy by implying that he had hormones.

Finally, the priest said, "Actually, I think I do have an army."

"What, in the cloak?"

"No!" Joseph stamped his foot impatiently. "No, that's not - you did that on purpose! Argh. Let's - come on, let's get out of here."

Zacharias trailed after the other boy, and took off his glasses to descend the spiralling stairs. "I don't suppose it has anything to do with God?"

"It has everything to do with God."

"Oh. One of those things, then."
