I'm glad I'm not the only one that read about the Dementors and thought "And these are not Ringwraiths...how?"
I like Mrs. Rowling, I've met her and she's a very nice lady, and I am very happy that the books are bringing in a new generation of readers, but I do believe, as an author, that it is shameful how many of her ideas I can actually put brackets around and cite the source novel from which it originally came.
Well, the Dementors being Ringwraithy's more of a movie-thing, I think. While the image of the Dementors may have been influenced by them, I never really saw them as Ringwraiths. But then I'm used to more blatant ripoffs, like Terry Brooks's The Sword of Shannara. If the Skullbearers aren't Ringwraiths, and Flick and Shea aren't Sam and Frodo, the Vale isn't the Shire, bordermen aren't Rangers, and Callahorn isn't Rohan... well. =P
Brooks is indeed a very guilty party where Tolkien ripoffs are concerned.
Perahps it's just because I'm such a huge Tolkien geek, I dunno, but even reading about the Dementors I immediately began drawing parallels between the two. Rowling's previous scuffles with plagiarism claims and lawsuits didn't do much to allay my fears, either.
